A 'new class' of Russian hackers are trying to cripple Britain's infrastructure, Cabinet Minister Oliver Dowden warns today.
Kremlin-aligned groups such as Wagner are launching potentially devastating attacks to 'disrupt or destroy', targeting infrastructure in key sectors such as energy and utilities, the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster will tell a cyber conference.
The UK's National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) is set to issue an official threat notice to critical national infrastructure operators today, warning that they face an unpredictable 'new class of Russian cyber adversary' desperate to wreak havoc in Britain.
Outlining the threat at the CyberUK Conference in Belfast, Mr Dowden will set out how ideologically driven groups are launching unrestrained attacks on companies responsible for 'keeping the lights on'.
In the past few months, several groups aligned to Russian president Vladimir Putin have turned their focus towards the UK, having learned lessons from the conflict in Ukraine where cyber attacks have taken down the national power grid, interfered with nuclear power plants and satellite communication systems.
